During COP 16 in Cali, Colombia, the UN Environment Programme World Conservation Monitoring Centre (UNEP-WCMC) and the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) released the “Protected Planet Report 2024.” This report assesses the state of protected and conserved areas globally.
Chapter 6 of this report focuses on the connections between protected areas and the measurement of their status worldwide. According to the report, only 8.52% of the land is both protected and connected. It concludes that the global network of protected areas is still not well connected and emphasizes the importance of “well-connected” protected and conserved areas to ensure the achievement of the 30×30 goal.
